SonicEdge Develops Miniature Mics For Use In Wireless Earbuds

Technology miniaturisation is moving fast in the audio world as surface mount speakers and tiny microphones mean electronic devices are still shrinking as performance expands. SonicEdge Ltd creates innovative audio components designed to fit in incredibly small spaces.

Sonic Edge is a company that specializes in MEMS miniature speaker technology. MEMS (for micro-electromechanical systems) speakers employ drivers that are fabricated on silicon chips, which can be made to be very small, and can offer advantages in audio quality, and manufacturing.

SonicEdge Ltd. (Binyamina, Israel), founded in November 2018, is developing an ultrasound-based MEMS audio speaker. This is claimed to provide enhanced audio in small form factors at both low and high frequencies and extended operation to 20KHz and beyond. Applications for the ultrasound system is therefore the ‘usual suspects’ of hearables – ear buds, augmented and virtual reality headsets and glasses, headphones and heading aids.

As a speaker shrinks in size, keeping the resonance balanced is a complex challenge and the quality of sound is compromised.

In addition to being smaller and consuming less power than existing speakers, another exciting aspect of all this is scalability. The SE1000 (with 1 speaker chip as shown above) is ideal for use in earbuds (one SE1000 for each ear). The SE2000 (with 4 speaker chips) can be used in headphones (one SE2000 for each ear). The SE3000 (with 4 speaker chips plus added acoustics) is applicable to virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) glasses, goggles, and headsets. And the SE4000/SE5000 (with 4/8 speaker chips plus added acoustics) will transform smartphones and tablet computers into audiophiles’ dream devices.
